Gangsta

Gangsta Episode 1 Review
Ergastulum is a little too empty and sometimes a bit too clean for what’s happening, but studio Manglobe does a great job of humanizing those affected by the mafia. There’s enough information dripped in about the mobs on top, Tags, and our protagonists’ line of work to make the show definitely worth watching week by week.
Gangsta Episode 2 Review
It was good to see that Gangsta makes a point to show that, even though they’re our protagonists, Worick and Nicolas are scary and powerful. This episode follows a predictable format, but the new information on Tags, the hints at a new conflict, and the introduction of Nina and Dr. Theo were great.
Gangsta Episode 3 Review
Gangsta had a hard hitting introduction to the episode, but that heaviness fails to carry through the episode. It was interesting to learn more about the Handymen’s past, but without a clear conflict for Gangsta, all the great character development is starting to weigh down the show.

Gate

Gate Episode 1 Review
Gate is an interesting new anime with a fun premise and great action. Unfortunately, its tone and main character need a bit of work. If these two issues can be fixed, then Gate has the potential to be a great series.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers

Rokka Episode 1 Review
Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers is a promising anime with great art direction, a cool world, and exciting action sequences. Though its cliche story and one note hero prevent it from being everything it could be, it's still worth checking out.

Ushio and Tora

Ushio and Tora Episode 1 Review
Studio Vlon and MAPPA breathed life into the 1990s manga Ushio and Tora. This first episode not only flows well and establishes a good base, but also maintains the looks and feel of great ‘90s anime. Ushio and Tora are constantly underestimating each other, which not only provides for great comedy, but also sets up great theme that can carry through the series.

Aoharu x Machinegun

Aoharu x Machinegun Episode 1 Review
Aoharu x Machinegun protagonist Hotaru’s passion for justice and Matsuoka’s cool demeanor make for good contrast, and it’ll be interesting to see how the two work together in an airsoft team. The final fight in this episode was a little boring to watch, but the setup for the rest of the series is interesting.

Charlotte

Charlotte Episode 1 Review
Charlotte runs its characters through many hilarious scenarios that include the swift rise and fall of its protagonist Yu and imperfect abilities that leave their users at a disadvantage. While Yu’s sister is one of the more annoying cliche little sisters, this show still has a lot of potential for growth, especially with such an entertainingly selfish protagonist.

Overlord

Overlord Episode 1 Review
Overlord is successful in establishing Momonga’s opposing personalities and his love for his guild, but it fails to pace the information appropriately. Momonga’s interaction with Albedo is gross, and her overreactions to his touch are awkward to watch. There are moments that hint at a promising setup, but the episode ultimately feels like a waste of time.

School-Live

School-Live Episode 1 Review
Even knowing the premise of School-Live beforehand, the ending reveal is so perfectly done that it still hits hard. The episode tested my patience at first and didn't feel worth my time, but everything I'd thought was pointless was leading somewhere great. What appears to be a super-cute show about high school girls and zombies is actually shaping up to be an impactful and emotional series, and I can't wait to see where it goes next.

Snow White with the Red Hair

Snow White with the Red Hair Episode 1 Review
Snow White with the Red Hair’s story and characters have a lot of promise, but little of it gets drawn out at its start. It’s a weak start for such a good-looking series.

Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace

Rampo Kitan Episode 1 Review
At the beginning of the episode, a screen declares that the anime is being made in honor of the 50th anniversary of author Edogawa Rampo's death. It's dark but fitting, and Rampo Kitan looks to be a properly creepy tribute to the author. I just hope Kobayashi is fleshed out a bit more in the coming episodes — he's too bland at this point for a world with such a well-established tone.

Castle Town Dandelion

Castle Town Dandelion Episode 1 Review
An anime series doesn’t have to be deep to be great, particularly when it’s extremely polished in how it handles pacing, dialog flow, and characterization—and Castle Town Dandelion does all of that very well. “The Sakurada Family’s Nine Siblings” is a great start for what hopefully proves to be reliable, lighthearted fun.

Classroom Crisis

screen-shot-2015-07-09-at-52717-pm-2png-9bebc5png
Classroom Crisis Episode 1 Review
It's normal to watch an episode a second time in order to fine-tune your analysis, but I had to watch Classroom Crisis' premiere again just to remember what happened — I forgot what was going on almost as soon as I had watched it the first time. It fails to develop a world I want to stay in, and it's too generic to make anything good out of its cool sci-fi premise.

God Eater

God Eater Episode 1 Review
God Eater is off to a rough start as it thrusts us into a cool world that’s focused on a boring, cliche protagonist. The animation style captures look of the God Eater games well and depicts humanity’s dire situation. Unfortunately, the episode suffers from poor pacing, but it ends on a good note with some minor development for its lead.
